IELTS Writing Task 2: Introduction Techniques - "Contrast and Resolution" & "Global Perspective"

Today, I’ll introduce you to two powerful strategies for crafting an engaging introduction in your IELTS Task 2 essay—Contrast and Resolution and Global Perspective. These techniques not only grab the reader’s attention but also lay a solid foundation for the logical structure of your essay, helping to convey well-reasoned and thoughtful arguments.

1. Contrast and Resolution: The Art of Reversal

"Contrast and Resolution" is a highly effective approach, often used to present an idea and then skillfully pivot to your own argument. This method is frequently seen in discursive essays, as it allows your viewpoint to stand out with more impact and persuasiveness.

How to Use "Contrast and Resolution"

At the core of this technique is the structure of "Although...", where you start with a widely accepted or conventional idea, followed by your own opposing argument. This method not only brings readers quickly to the heart of the discussion but also encourages them to think critically, adding weight to your argument.

Let’s look at an IELTS essay topic:

"The older generations have very traditional ideas about the correct ways of life, thinking, and behaviour. However, some people think that these ideas are not helpful for the young generations to prepare for modern life." To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

This question addresses the generational clash between traditional values and modern life. The Contrast and Resolution technique would work well here. Consider this introduction:

1. Presenting the Conventional View:

"Although it is commonly believed that the wisdom and traditional values of older generations provide valuable life lessons for the young, particularly in areas such as appropriate behaviour and moral principles..."

Here, you acknowledge the established viewpoint, which resonates with many.

2. Introducing Your Counter-Argument:

"...this is increasingly not the case in today’s fast-paced modern world, where the challenges faced by younger generations are vastly different from those in the past."

With this turn, you introduce your position, highlighting how these traditional values may no longer suit contemporary life.

This example shows how to apply Contrast and Resolution to create a compelling and logically structured introduction.

Other phrases that can help with this approach include:

- "Although it is widely accepted that..."

- "While many believe that..."

Such structures can lead into any argument, whether you agree or disagree with the prompt, effectively showcasing both your analytical and flexible thinking.

2. Global Perspective: A Broader Outlook

The second technique, Global Perspective, elevates your essay by introducing the topic from a more global or societal viewpoint. This makes your essay appear more expansive and relevant, particularly useful for discussing topics like social issues, technology, or education.

How to Use "Global Perspective"

In your introduction, start by pointing to a global trend, societal shift, or widespread consensus. This places your argument within a larger context, giving your essay a more sophisticated and contemporary feel.

Let’s explore this technique using another IELTS topic:

Today's students can access information and learn from the internet and other sources. Therefore, teachers in the classroom are no longer necessary. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

This topic already points to a global trend in education, making Global Perspective an ideal approach. You could write:

1. Introducing the Global Trend:

"In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards digital platforms such as the internet, where students increasingly turn for information and education."

This highlights a modern, global phenomenon, setting the stage for your argument.

2. Leading to Your Main Argument:

"As a result, many have begun to question the relevance of traditional classroom teaching, with some even suggesting that teachers are no longer essential in today’s education system."

You seamlessly transition from the global trend to the essay’s core issue—whether teachers are still necessary.

Instead of just saying "growing trend", you can also use phrases like:

- "There has been a significant shift towards..."

- "Over the past decade, we have witnessed a dramatic change in..."

- "The world has seen a remarkable transformation in..."

These expressions help you tie your argument to a broader context, enhancing both the depth and relevance of your essay.

Combining the Two Techniques: A Practical Example

To better understand these techniques, let’s combine both Contrast and Resolution and Global Perspective in response to the following topic:

Some people believe that governments should focus on promoting economic growth, while others argue that they should prioritise social welfare. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

1. Contrast and Resolution:

Although it is widely accepted that economic growth is the key to national prosperity and overall development, this alone cannot guarantee long-term social stability. In fact, without adequate social welfare, economic progress may be undermined by growing inequality and social unrest.

This introduction uses Contrast and Resolution by acknowledging the value of economic growth but pivoting to highlight the essential role of social welfare.

2. Global Perspective:

In recent years, economists and policymakers worldwide have engaged in an ongoing debate about whether governments should prioritise economic growth or focus more on social welfare. While many nations have aggressively pursued growth strategies, others are realising the importance of addressing citizens’ needs through robust welfare systems.

This approach starts with a broad view, showing how the topic is part of a global conversation, and then zeroes in on the core issue.

Conclusion

Through today’s session, you should have gained a deeper understanding of how to apply the Contrast and Resolution and Global Perspective techniques to your IELTS Task 2 introductions. These methods will help you present your arguments with clarity, logic, and a touch of sophistication.

By using Contrast and Resolution, you can make your viewpoint more striking through logical reversal, while Global Perspective enhances your essay by placing it in a broader, more contemporary context. Hopefully, you’ll find these strategies useful in your future writing practice, allowing you to impress your examiners and earn higher scores.
